How to plan a Pokémon story team

A good playthrough party starts with Pokémon you want to use, then adds enough variety to handle the routes, bosses, and surprises in your specific game.

01

Start with your game and favorites

Choose Emerald, Crystal, or Yellow and the next major battle. The picker then limits the roster to Pokémon obtainable by that point in the selected version.

02

Spread out weaknesses

Two teammates sharing a weakness can be manageable, but three or four may make one boss difficult. Add a resistance, immunity, or a faster answer instead of chasing a perfect score.

03

Plan for the route, not only the finale

Think about evolution levels, when useful moves arrive, access to healing or travel utility, and the next few major fights. Revisit the lineup as your adventure opens new areas.

A planning board, not a legality checker

Pokémon games have different encounter tables, learnsets, evolution methods, and boss orders. This planner keeps those differences separate instead of treating every generation as one shared roster.

What this planner checks

  • Version-specific wild encounters, gifts, starters, and evolution paths
  • Availability before the selected Gym or major battle
  • Super-effective coverage from recorded level-up and TM/HM moves

What you still need to check

  • Exact damage, opponent AI, levels, natures, stats, and held items
  • Optional transfers, glitches, events, and every one-off NPC trade
  • Competitive clauses, tiers, formats, and battle legality

A practical playthrough checklist

Use the type overview as one clue, then make the final choices around the game you are actually playing and the Pokémon you will enjoy training.

  1. 1Confirm every member is obtainable in your version at a useful point in the story.
  2. 2Avoid relying on several Pokémon that evolve very late unless that is part of the challenge.
  3. 3Give important bosses at least two possible answers, not one fragile counter.
  4. 4Check when your planned attacks, abilities, and held items actually become available.
  5. 5Keep a favorite even when it is not optimal—the goal of a story team is to enjoy the journey.

Pokémon Playthrough Team Planner FAQ

What the casual planner covers, what it deliberately leaves out, and when to switch to the competitive builder.

Does the planner support a specific Pokémon game?

The first release supports Pokémon Emerald, Crystal, and Yellow. Each version has its own obtainable roster, encounter locations, evolution paths, learnsets, and major-battle timeline. More games can be added to the same data model.

Does it validate moves, items, abilities, or evolutions?

It checks recorded level-up and TM/HM moves plus evolution methods for the selected version. It does not simulate exact levels, stats, held items, battle AI, or damage rolls.

Can I use this team for competitive battles?

This page does not enforce competitive rules. Use FavePoke’s Competitive Team Builder for Showdown formats, complete sets, legality checks, roles, speed tiers, and import or export.

Can I save and share a playthrough team?

Yes. The current six slots save locally in your browser, and Copy share link creates a URL containing the selected lineup. No account is required.
